Vitrouve Project

Vitrouve is an innovative platform designed to engage architects, architecture students, and various other users. Set against the rich and complex historical backdrop of the early 20th century—a time shaped by two world wars, economic upheavals, and the birth of the Bauhaus movement—the project seeks to visualize and analyze architectural projects, highlighting both historical influences and sustainability factors. This project was a collaborative group effort, demonstrating the strength of teamwork in delivering a multifaceted digital solution.

Key Features:

Interactive Map: Displays the sustainability of architectural projects across Europe, showing whether buildings have changed over time.

Architects Page: Promotes equality among architects by showcasing lesser-known figures, adding a sociological dimension.

Movements Page: Illustrates the transition of architectural movements, focusing on the connections between Art Deco, Brutalism, and Modernism.

We carefully curated the data from the Vidéomuseum archive, initially containing 20,130 architectural works, down to 57 projects.

Key steps included:

Historical Focus: Narrowing the timeline to 1914-1950 due to its impact on architecture.

Manual Filtering: Reducing projects based on feasibility and representation.

Data Quality: Refining titles and project details for clarity.

Graphic Design & Identity:

Logo: Created using Flexa Sans typography and inspired by the hexagonal shape, symbolizing search and discovery.

Visual Identity: The design reflects a balance between modernism and historical context, using a color palette influenced by Le Corbusier’s Le Modulor.

Development & Technology:

We developed the platform using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Key technologies integrated include:

Mapbox Leaflet: For an interactive map interface.

Google Maps Street View API: To provide immersive location views.

Custom API: Built with PHP to handle data from MySQL in different formats (GeoJSON, JSON, TSV).
